Reiki

Reiki is life force energy. If you've ever studied or practiced qigong, tai chi, or something similar, then you already know reiki!
In the context of a healing environment, reiki is akin to the laying on of hands; a practical "application" of balancing life force energy.

The history of this energy in different cultures has only one major difference: semantics.
  • The Polynesians call it "Mana"
  • Native American Iroquois call it "Orenda"
  • India: Prana
  • "Ruach" in Hebrew
  • "Barraka" in some Islamic countries
  • "Ch'i" in China
  • "Ki" in Japan

Our bodies and beings naturally work towards homeostasis, or balance. By encouraging your system toward balance, Reiki can help you in any situation, even when it isn’t the only help you need.

Reiki is unique in that you can receive a Reiki treatment from a practitioner or you can learn self practice.

Balance means different things at different times. If you are tired, you’ll feel refreshed. If you are anxious, you’ll feel serene. If you are distressed, you’ll feel comforted. Instead of feeling overwhelmed, you’ll discover a renewed clarity and purpose. And these subjective changes come with physical changes associated with deep relaxation, such as a slower heart rate and easier breathing.

The first session usually brings improvement, and the benefits grow with repeated sessions. In emergencies or during intensive care, patients often show benefit within a few minutes. Reiki practitioners can be found in hospitals, massage clinics, spiritual centers, churches, etc.

When you receive Reiki healing, you’ll lie fully clothed on a treatment table while the Reiki practitioner places hands lightly on or just above your head and torso. Alternately, reiki can be applied before, during, or after a massage or yoga session.
